What a fraction pie chart shows

A fraction pie chart is one whole, drawn as a circle, cut into equal wedges. The denominator of the fraction decides how many wedges the circle has, and the numerator decides how many of them are shaded. So 3/8 is a circle cut into eight identical wedges with three of them coloured in: the shaded area is the fraction, and the whole circle is the 1 that the fraction is a part of.

The reason this model is worth using is that it makes the denominator do visible work. When you increase the denominator, the wedges get thinner, which is the opposite of what many students expect from a bigger bottom number. Because every wedge in a circle must be the same size, the picture also enforces the rule that fractions are built from equal parts, not just any parts.

Pie charts have one limit worth naming: comparing two fractions by eye is harder with wedges than with bars, because the human eye judges length better than angle. How to read a fraction pie chart

  1. Count every wedge in the circle, shaded and unshaded. That total is the denominator.
  2. Count only the shaded wedges. That count is the numerator.
  3. Write the shaded count over the total count. Three shaded out of eight wedges is 3/8.
  4. Check the leftover. The unshaded wedges are the rest of the whole, so 3/8 shaded means 5/8 unshaded, and the two add up to 8/8.
  5. If more than one circle is shown, the fraction is improper. Count each full circle as 1 whole, then add the partly shaded circle as a fraction.

Three worked examples

Example 1: 3/8 shaded

The circle is cut into 8 equal wedges, so each wedge is one eighth. Three of them are shaded, which reads as 3/8. Counting the unshaded wedges gives 5/8, and the two parts add back to 8/8, one whole.

Example 2: 5/6 shaded

Six equal wedges means each one is a sixth, and five are shaded. Only one wedge is left, so 5/6 sits close to a whole. This is the picture to show when a student needs to see why 5/6 is bigger than 1/2 without doing any arithmetic.

Example 3: 7/4, an improper fraction

Each circle holds only 4 quarters, so 7 quarters need a second circle. The first circle is fully shaded (4/4) and the second has 3 of its 4 wedges shaded. That is why 7/4 is the same as 1 and 3/4.
