Example 1: 1/2 = 2/4 = 4/8 on a number line

Start with the halfway point and keep splitting the intervals. Each split doubles the denominator and doubles the count, so the marker never moves.

  1. Draw the line from 0 to 1 and cut it into 2 equal parts. Mark 1 part from zero: that is 1/2.
  2. Cut each half in two. The line now shows quarters, and the marker sits on the second tick, so 1/2 = 2/4.
  3. Cut each quarter in two again. The line shows eighths, the marker sits on the fourth tick, so 1/2 = 4/8.
  4. Notice the pattern: the numerator and denominator both doubled each time, 1/2 to 2/4 to 4/8, because the parts got half as wide and you needed twice as many.

Example 2: 2/3 = 4/6 = 8/12 on a number line

Thirds are the better example to work second, because the point does not sit on any tidy landmark like a half. It still holds still.

  1. Cut the line from 0 to 1 into 3 equal parts and count 2 of them. That point is 2/3.
  2. Split each third into two. There are now 6 intervals, and reaching the same point takes 4 of them, so 2/3 = 4/6.
  3. Split each sixth into two. There are now 12 intervals, and the same point takes 8, so 2/3 = 8/12.
  4. Check it against the arithmetic: 2/3 times 2/2 is 4/6, and 4/6 times 2/2 is 8/12. Multiplying by 2/2 is multiplying by 1, which is why the value cannot change.
