Example 1: plotting 3/4 on a number line

The denominator is 4, so the whole from 0 to 1 is cut into four equal parts. The numerator is 3, so you count three of those parts from zero.

  1. Draw the line and label 0 at the left and 1 at the right.
  2. Split the gap into 4 equal intervals. Each tick is one quarter wide.
  3. Label the ticks 1/4, 2/4, 3/4 as you go, so the counting is visible.
  4. Count three intervals from 0 and mark the point. That point is 3/4.
