Order Fractions Visually, Least to Greatest

How to read the stack

  • Every bar is the same total length, so shaded length is a fair comparison
  • Pieces per bar equal the denominator; shaded pieces equal the numerator
  • Ascending puts the shortest shaded bar first, descending puts the longest first
  • Bars of equal shaded length are equivalent fractions
  • Add up to 6 fractions with the "Add Another Fraction" button

Worked Example: Ordering 2/3, 3/5, 1/2, 5/8

Four fractions that all sit near one half, which is the case where reading the numbers goes wrong most often. Here is the full reasoning, with every bar drawn to the same total length.

Least to greatest: 1/2 < 3/5 < 5/8 < 2/3

  • Read the bars: the shaded lengths grow steadily down the stack, so the order is the order of the bars. 1/2 shades exactly half, and everything below it shades a little more.
  • Check with a common denominator: the LCD of 2/3, 3/5, 1/2, 5/8 is 120, giving 1/2 = 60/120, 3/5 = 72/120, 5/8 = 75/120, 2/3 = 80/120. Sorting those numerators gives the same sequence.
  • Check with decimals: 1/2 = 0.5000, 3/5 = 0.6000, 5/8 = 0.6250, 2/3 = 0.6667. Ascending decimals, same order again.
  • The trap: 3/5 has the largest denominator of the three non-half fractions but is not the largest fraction. Denominators say how many pieces, not how much.

Three Ways to Order Fractions

Bar models: sort by shaded length

Draw each fraction as a bar of identical total length, then stack the bars and read them top to bottom. This is the method that explains itself: nobody has to be told that a longer shaded region means a bigger fraction. It is also the fastest way to spot equivalent fractions in a set, because their bars shade to exactly the same point.

Common denominator: sort the numerators

Find one denominator that works for every fraction in the set, rewrite them all with it, then sort by numerator. This keeps the fractions exact and is the method to use when the sorted set feeds into more arithmetic. It is the same operation as cutting all the bars into identical pieces.

Decimals: divide, then sort

Divide each numerator by its denominator and sort the decimals. This scales best when there are many fractions or awkward denominators, which is why this tool sorts by exact value and shows you the decimal for each entry. The one caution is rounding: fractions that differ far down the decimal need the common-denominator check.
